AMG Sport was Mercedes-Benz's own factory styling package for the C-Class Coupe. A deeper front apron, its own grille treatment, side skirts, all fitted on the production line rather than bolted on afterwards. Pull up in this and nobody is guessing it is a 2014 car. Behind the badge sits the C180's 1.6-litre turbocharged petrol: 156 PS, with 250 Nm from just 1,250 rpm. It pulls harder than the badge on the boot suggests.
The C-Class Coupe drives through its rear wheels, so the fronts only have to steer. Add the AMG Sport package's wheels and suspension settings and you get a car that looks planted standing still and stays balanced when you turn into a corner. Front-wheel-drive rivals at this money cannot give you that. Drive goes through Mercedes' 7G-Tronic Plus seven-speed automatic, which slurs through traffic and holds a gear the moment you ask it to.
Drop the windows and the whole side of the car opens up. That is the frameless door glass, and it is the detail people notice when you pull up. Above your head is the panoramic glass sunroof, so the cabin is far brighter than the low roofline suggests. You are not giving up the boot for it either: 450 litres, more than most family hatchbacks. 72,105 miles, with ten Mercedes main dealer stamps in the book.
